A REGIONAL district officer of the Bureau of Internal Revenue was gunned down in Antipolo City Thursday morning while on his way to his office, police said.

Marcelino Yap, 46, was ambushed and then shot dead around 8:45 p.m. in front of L/M Resto Bar while he was about to enter his office in the S&C Building on Marcos Highway in Mayamot village, Police Supt. Rodino Elfa said.

Witnesses said one of the suspects opened fire on Yap, hitting him in the head and body. Yap’s driver tried to ram the suspects’ motorcycle to stop their escape but failed.

Police found five empty shells from a .45 cal. Pistol, Yap’s wallet with cash in it, and his mobile cell phone on the crime scene.

Yap had been head of a district covering San Mateo, Marikina, Antipolo, Rizal and Teresa. He left behind his wife and six children.,

Chief Supt. Samuel Pagdilao Jr. told the Manila Standard that he had formed a task force to into the tax cases that Yap had been handling in case those had something to do with his killing.

Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares said Yap was among the district officers who managed to deliver on the collection targets she had set.

“He did okay, so when I reshuffled all the revenue district officers early this year, he was not moved,” Henares said.

“The authorities are investigating whether what happened was of a personal nature or work-related.”

Yap’s staff described him as hard-working. He had been easy to work with, but strict when it came to tax administration, they said. Gigi Muñoz David and Elaine Ramos-Alanguilan
