MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) expressed Monday its determination to collect withholding taxes from affluent barangays nationwide.

Revenue Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares instructed her staff to draft up new guidelines to ensure the effective monitoring and collection of taxes from this source.

The BIR chief took the move following reports that many barangays were remiss in remitting withholding taxes due the government.

Henares instructed revenue district officers to start identifying delinquent barangays and take appropriate action against their chairmen and treasurers.

Informed sources said that the erring barangay officials don't bother to collect internal revenue taxes despite huge allotments they are receiving from their local government units.

Henares is allegedly aware that majority of the 24,000 barangays nationwide have been complaining of lack of funds, although many of them are awash with cash like those in exclusive villages and commercial centers in Metro Manila and nearby areas. (Jun Ramirez)
