MANILA, Philippines – Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares said Friday that the government's main tax agency is confident to attain its December collection target.
Jacinto-Henares explained in a telephone interview that the 9 percent growth in collection goal this month against the P68.374 billion actual revenue take in December last year is a “reasonable” increase.
“The 9 percent is a goal that seems to be attainable,” Jacinto-Henares added. She also said that the BIR, which makes up more than 60 percent of government income, is keeping its internal full-year collection target of P830 billion, lower compared with the official government goal of P860 billion.
The BIR, meanwhile, will announce its actual November collection performance on December 15.
In January to October, the BIR has collected P670.9 billion, higher by 10 percent compared with P612 billion in the same period last year.
In October alone, the main tax agency's revenue take increased by 16 percent to P63.6 billion from P54.9 billion in the same month in 2009.
Henares said the BIR’s performance is improving compared with last year. She noted that in August, the agency's collection grew by 17 percent, the highest in about 28 months.
With the improving performance of the agency, Henares said the BIR is still striving hard to meet its revised revenue goal of P860 billion for the year.
“We are still striving to keep the P860 billion,” she noted.
She nonetheless reiterated that the previous goal of P830 billion is a “doable” target.
Finance Secretary Cesar V. Purisima earlier said the government will push the BIR and Bureau of Customs to boost their collections as the Department of Budget and Management increases the country's spending efficiency.
