MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is changing guidelines for its informer's reward system as more and more people are coming out with all sort of unverifiable tax evasion denunciations.
Under new guidelines, BIR will no longer accept information culled from newspaper reports and other inaccurate sources causing the BIR investigators to do much of the sleuthing job.
Revenue Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares said she has already drafted proposed regulations for the reward system.
This will be up for review and approval by the Department of Finance, she said.
The proposed guideline will make it easier for tax probers to establish the accuracy of such information and collect the deficiency taxes.
It prescribes a deadline for the submission of reports by tax fraud investigators.
Tax fraud probers will only furnish informers with the status of the investigation but not the detailed data gathered as it will constitute unlawful divulgence of information.
The informers will also be required to submit in writing requests for the status of the investigation to prevent them from "stubbornly and persistently" following up the cases. (Jun Ramirez)
